Rising Sun’s policy agenda integrates climate solutions with workforce, equity, and climate resilient infrastructure to advocate for equitable access to green career pathways while addressing the effects of climate change on vulnerable communities. In short, the best climate policies also prioritize workforce development and economic justice.
Rising Sun’s Guiding Policy Principles
In pursuit of our mission to build career pathways for economic equity and climate resilience, Rising Sun established six principles to guide our advocacy agenda:
Expand access, quality, and quantity of green jobs for low-income and disadvantaged communities.
By advocating to expand the quality and quantity of green jobs accessible to socioeconomically disadvantaged and justice system impacted individuals, Rising Sun builds pathways to high-wage careers and economic sustainability.
Equal Access to Investments
Climate Risk Resilience
Government investment in clean and energy efficient technologies must directly benefit frontline communities. Rising Sun commits to ensuring that all communities build resilience to climate risk and enjoy access to environmental investments.
Preparing for the Carbon Neutral Economy
In California, construction jobs are green jobs. By supporting investment in green workforce development, Rising Sun promotes stable, high-wage careers for adults burdened by socioeconomic barriers while insuring youth against experiencing them. Training the workforce of the future breaks cycles of intergenerational poverty today.
Empowering Future Leaders
Addressing climate change is not optional. To secure a brighter future, we need leaders able to build relationships, take action, and enact sustainable solutions. No one understands this better than our youth. Early, customer-facing employment in the green economy establishes career-building networks and promotes an ethos of service and responsibility in future leaders.
Residential Energy Efficiency
It is imperative that California both build more housing and update the infrastructure of existing housing in a manner that reduces residential greenhouse gas output. To that end, Rising Sun eliminates barriers to participation in residential energy efficiency programs. Disruption of daily life is the biggest barrier to upgrading household infrastructure. By sending youth to deliver energy efficiency upgrades in their own backyards, Rising Sun reduces the initial costs of time and opportunity to Bay Area households while facilitating learning and community engagement.
Clean Technology Investment
Rising Sun furthers the adoption of clean technology by supporting thoughtful government investment focused on infrastructure that will withstand changing climate conditions while maximizing equity.
