A leader is a person who transforms a complex and diverse group of people into an effective team. Through a combination of personality and authority, a leader pushes their group towards achieving common goals in such a way that everyone is operating at their best. Ultimately, this is the type of leader I hope to be someday; someone who empowers individuals to connect and come together as a group to achieve a common goal while unleashing their maximum potential.

As a Leader In Field Training (LIFT), my assumption was that the managers would manage and I would simply be around the office to help everything run more smoothly. However, during the Energy Specialists’ training week, I realized that my position would require more. l attended a presentation at our office and someone asked a complex question that no one could answer. The room was silent, and all eyes fell on me. I realized at that moment that the role I would be playing this summer was much greater than what I had done last year as an Energy Specialist. Instead of going out on Green House Calls, I was going to be organizing them. Instead of being on a single team, I was going to be supporting a group. Instead of being a helping hand, I was going to be a leader.

As the week went on, I had more leadership responsibilities pile on. I helped the Energy Specialists learn and I helped the managers with their numerous tasks. I’ve learned that flexibility is the most important trait of a good leader. I am now able to adapt to fill any role that is needed to help everything run smoothly. As I help our Energy Specialists gain the skills they need to be successful this summer, Rising Sun has helped me gain the leadership skills I need to be a successful leader for years to come.
