As soon as I finished my job as an Energy Specialist (ES) last summer, I knew that I wanted to reapply for the Leader in Field Training (LIFT) position offered at Rising Sun. The LIFT position is a fantastic opportunity for returning Energy Specialists to grow within Rising Sun’s, California Youth Energy Services program and to learn technical and transferable skills in a leadership role. LIFT individuals are given the opportunity to gain leadership skills and acquire hands-on experience in program management by assisting their Summer Program Managers.

I could see the tangible difference I was making in my community…

I was lucky enough to get the LIFt position, and so far, have been having a fantastic time this summer. I enjoyed my time as an Energy Specialist for many reasons. The primary reason being that I could see the tangible difference I was making in my community through minimizing energy and water usage. As a LIFT, I feel the impact of my actions in the community from both an environmental standpoint and a youth development standpoint.

I mentor fourteen local youth at my site, leading weekly Professional Development workshops ranging in topics from money management to resume writing. Having recently been an Energy Specialist, I can advise the ES’s on everything from marketing their skills learned at Rising Sun to future employers, to the literal day-to-day of being an ES.

I love taking a leadership role in our office and our community…

Grace hard at work, in her new leadership, focused position.

At the same time, I am being mentored by my managers on skills relevant to managing the office and those working in it.  I love taking a leadership role in our office and our community and the experience I am gaining doing so is invaluable, especially since in the future I hope to own my own company and manage my employees in a respectful and thoughtful manner.
