Rising Sun Energy Center has partnered with Solar Richmond and Berkeley City College to offer a new and expanded version of our East Bay Green Job Corps (EBGJC) program.

East Bay Green Job Corps (EBGJC) is a free training and education program designed to help youth and young adults (ages 18-24) get the skills they need to enter green careers.

Over the course of 18 months in 2010 and 2011, the EBGJC program ran six eight-week cohorts – two in Oakland, two in Richmond, and two in Berkeley. Graduates of the program went on to participate in further education and training programs like GETS, Richmond BUILD, and Solar Richmond.  Some also worked as CYES Energy Specialists and solar marketing interns at Solar Richmond.

With support from the City of Oakland, we were able to re-launch the EBGJC program with some key improvements.  East Bay Green Job Corps is now a 16-week bridge program that combines classroom and fieldwork experience.  Participants will:

  • Learn job readiness and leadership skills
  • Build eco-literacy and civic engagement
  • Improve your math and English skills
  • Earn 13 units of college credit
  • Participate in paid energy efficiency and solar internships

Participants will spend each morning taking academic and life skills classes at Berkeley City College, and then work in energy efficiency and solar marketing internships in the afternoon.  East Bay Green Job Corps staff will work with each participant to develop an individual plan and help them reach their educational and career goals.  After completing the program, East Bay Green Job Corps participants may continue on to community college, vocational training programs, union apprenticeships, or employment.

The fall EBGJC cohort begins September 6 and Runs through December.  A second cohort will take place beginning in February and running through May 2012.

Best,
Elena
