Rising Sun is excited to welcome Phil Miller and Mel Parker, MD, as our incoming Board Chair and Vice Chair.
Once a member of Rising Sun’s staff, Phil is currently the Senior Director of Finance and Administration with Camp Tawonga, where he leads the organization’s operating and capital budgets; investments; endowment portfolio; and financial systems and initiatives.
“Rising Sun’s mission and work at the intersection of economic equity and climate resilience continues to be so important and critical to achieving the outcomes our communities demand and deserve. I’m continually inspired by the staff and their dedication—plugging in as Board Chair feels easy and natural because I know how committed and fantastic the staff are.
I am looking forward to really leading from behind and supporting the leadership and staff in their work. Climate, jobs, and equity have the attention of our lawmakers and I’m eager to support the organization as it continues to become a critical and indispensable partner at the table.”
A Kaiser Permanente physician, Mel has served as the Central Valley Chief of the Department of Urology, Assistant Physician in Chief for Risk, and since 2016 as the TPMG Regional Medical Director for Risk and Patient Safety, developing strategy for the Risk and Patient Safety Program.
“I was prompted to serve as Vice Chair by the Rising Sun mission: career development opportunities that are life changing for those who are in need, a focus on equity—which is particularly meaningful for me as a woman of color—and the combination of career training for youth and protecting our environment, which will have a positive impact for generations to come. During my short time as a board member, the excellent leadership, vision, and committed board and staff have inspired me to want to learn more. I look forward to serving and learning in the year ahead.
As Vice Chair and as the impact of COVID-19 pandemic changes, I’d like to support our Rising Sun leaders and staff in the safe transition to our new normal, with the resumption of our training programs. I would also like to increase awareness within communities and organizations of San Joaquin County regarding the opportunities that are available through Rising Sun. The organization is doing tremendous work, and, over time, others may be interested in partnering in some capacity.”
Rising Sun thanks our Chair Emeritus, Tyi Johnson, for the time, guidance, expertise, and love she has dedicated to our organization and mission. Her leadership sustained us through 2020 and has positioned Rising Sun to become the best of our possible iterations moving forward. Tyi will continue to champion our work as a member of our Advisory Council.
