Dear Rising Sun Community,

Rising Sun envisions a just and sustainable future for all people and our planet—a future in which American society lives up to our founding values. In 2020, Rising Sun vowed to denounce all forms of racism, bigotry, and violence. Today, in solidarity with Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities, we reaffirm our commitment.

In our own backyard, Asian American communities have faced an uptick in racially motivated violence and divisive rhetoric. With roots in the same xenophobia that led to 1942’s Japanese American exclusion, current hostilities are a stark reminder that, even in the Bay Area—especially in the Bay Area—we must acknowledge and actively oppose othering before it further divides us.

Rising Sun recognizes the trauma and outrage faced by Asian American members of our community and offers both support and advocacy in the name of awareness. Together, we can build a safe and more equitable future for all.

In solidarity and healing,

Rising Sun Center for Opportunity

Seeking to report an incident or locate further resources? Founded by the Asian Pacific Policy and Planning Council (A3PCON), Chinese for Affirmative Action (CAA), and San Francisco State University’s Asian American Studies Department, Stop AAPI Hate “tracks and responds to incidents of hate, violence, harassment, discrimination, shunning, and child bullying” toward the AAPI community. Their approach recognizes that “in order to effectively address anti-Asian racism we must work to end all forms of structural racism leveled at Black, Indigenous, and other communities of color.”
