Leadership is the art and skill of transforming your followers into dedicated team players and then directing them to complete your organization’s objectives while still protecting and developing the individuals underneath you. Inspirational and flexible, while remaining accountable and integrous, are some of the adjectives that could describe an ideal leader. My current leadership style is based on following organizational guidelines to a “T.” Someone much more knowledgeable in our organization has created the policies and required trainings for a reason and ensuring that our Energy Specialists receive that knowledge to the best of my ability is my current leadership goal. My other leadership goal is to become a leader that can exceed the directives of my superiors while ensuring my team’s personal needs and wants are met to the best of our organization’s and my abilities. In simpler terms, my leadership goal is to help elevate everyone who is professionally involved with me.

The best example of leadership I have demonstrated comes from my personal life. I was traveling with a small group of peers back to California from the East coast when we encountered numerous flight delays and cancellations that would turn a travel time of 8 hours into a nearly 40-hour ordeal that involved sleeping on the floor of an airport. I organized our group into different responsibilities such as researching possible connecting flights, calling our airline every hour for updates as recommended, contacting our organization’s superiors, and finding food and charging stations, all while maintaining an upbeat attitude. Serving as the emotional and logistical center of a group under stress while in stressful conditions is the leadership I want to perform every day.

Energy Specialists have a very defined set of responsibilities. Personal safety, measure installation and recording, and individual professional development are the responsibilities that an Energy Specialist will undertake over the summer. As a Leader In Field Training (LIFT), you are responsible for all the functions of an Energy Specialist when called upon to do so. LIFT are also responsible for planning and execution of the weekly professional development workshops. These lessons could be the difference for some Energy Specialists to find meaningful employment following their time at Rising Sun Energy Center. It is a pivotal and impactful position that also provides an assistant to the managers but also helps the Energy Specialists relate better to the management staff. The beginning and end of the work day provide a wonderful opportunity for the LIFT to step up and provide management support to the intake and outtake of 14 Energy Specialists with their numerous tools, measures, and individual questions. The confidence and competence that a LIFT displays will make or break an Energy Specialist’s trust in that LIFT. Rising Sun is helping me develop my youth development skills, and this job has helped me recognize that youth have a lot of energy and potential to bring to the table in a professional environment. I look forward to working with these young adults for the rest of summer.
